Benefits of Farmers Markets

A Look Into the Camarillo Farmers Market

By Olivea Herrera

Imagine it is the holidays, and you just spent a weekend with friends and family eating junk food and sweet drinks. By Monday, you will feel sluggish and craving any sort of fresh food. Going to a farmers market is the perfect fix for that or for anyone who may be needing naturally sourced, nutritious fruits and vegetables. These markets are primarily known for their produce, but you can also find many other types of food and even interior/exterior design items. While there are many benefits to shopping at the farmers market, two of the biggest benefits are accessibility and affordability. Each farmers market has different things to offer, but one that is reliable while providing specialty goods to local customers is the Camarillo Farmers Market.

Camarillo is a town near the LA area in California, and the farmers market there has much to offer. The stands sell the same healthy produce that most markets do, but what makes it special are the other stands that provide many different types of foods and decor. One stand imports Italian foods like pasta, sauces, and flavored oils straight from Italy itself. Another vendor sells French pastries that are as authentic as they can be. There is even a booth that sells freshly made tamales if you want to bring home lunch or snacks while shopping. Italian food is my favorite, so I was very excited to see the Italian booth selling authentic foods that I could use at home. I typically go to the farmers market with my mom. Recently, we tried their tamales for the first time together. This moment was especially nice because my family loves tamales and has a tradition of eating them every year around the holidays. Getting them outside of that time frame was a special treat. The masa and meat of the tamale tasted very good mixed with the salsa they served on the side.

Other than the food, some booths sell decorative signs for home decor, candles, homemade soaps, and crystals. Vendors like this stand out because you usually can’t find all of these specialty items in one place, let alone from small businesses that have honed their craft. For those who may have a special diet, some vendors serve vegan/vegetarian foods as well. To add to the ambiance of the market, each weekend there is a musician playing fun, calming music, usually acoustically on the guitar. This market is small, so the experience feels more personalized than other markets that may be bigger. I personally experienced a strong feeling of personal connection when my mom and I spoke to the crystal vendor at the Camarillo Farmers Market. While looking at the crystals he was selling, we got into a conversation about them and his business in general. After that, he gave us free crystals associated with our birth months. Because of our interest in his shop and experiences, he gave us something special as a thanks, and that interaction is something I will always remember about that farmers market.

Other larger farmers markets can lack this sense of connection, and I doubt that I could have had that conversation with the owner at a more populated farmers market. The Camarillo Farmers Market is special because its small size allows for more one-on-one conversations with the business owners, which can lead to developing meaningful relationships. Going to the Camarillo Farmers Market (or any other in your area) is a great idea to hang out with family and friends or go on a date. Not only are farmers markets good socially, but they have many other economic and environmental advantages.

In terms of accessibility, farmers markets are usually found on the weekends and available to anyone in local areas. Some may be far away and some may only be seasonal, but a simple answer to what options are out can be found by looking it up on the internet. The bottom line is that farmers markets are much more accessible than people may think, it just takes a little effort to find where they may be.

Fresh, nutritious foods such as berries and leafy greens are plentiful at farmers markets—and surprisingly affordable, especially when considering the labor going into these products. A study done in low-income communities on their opinions of this price difference found that 6 in 10 shoppers were able to find better prices at the farmers market than at an average grocery store. Also, the locally sourced food provided by these business owners happens to be more environmentally friendly because it has traveled less far. The produce also tastes better because it is naturally grown from soil without any pesticides.

A couple of additional benefits of going to the farmers market include being able to support local businesses and stimulating local economies. Farmers markets are made up of small vendors providing different goods. These vendors don’t usually have multiple locations in their businesses and get most of their revenue from the local public. Shopping at farmers markets and supporting these vendors helps their businesses grow, which is a benefit not only for them but also for you because it feels good to give back to the agricultural community that provides so much for us. Speaking of giving back, buying from farmers stimulates local economies by creating full-time farm operator jobs, which helps support local economies by reducing unemployment. There are many more benefits to frequenting farmers markets, like preserving America’s rural livelihoods and farmlands, promoting sustainability, and reducing your carbon footprint, but the most important element to pay attention to is that farmers markets are beneficial to society and are readily available to the masses.

After having looked at the multiple benefits of going to farmers markets, it is apparent that they are affordable to all kinds of people, a healthier alternative to grocery stores, and buying from them supports local businesses and agricultural communities in general. If you are looking for a fun weekend activity, consider going to a farmers market near you!
